When the Hotel Becomes the Destination
You know, it’s funny seeing this becoming a trend because I’ve been doing it for years. Long before the stats proved it, the double page spreads of Conde Nast Traveller and Mr and Mrs Smith had me booking holidays based on hotels that caught my imagination.
And no, I don’t mean all-inclusive resorts where you simply check in and stay put. I’m talking about hotels so inspiring that they become the experience, setting the tone for everything that follows.
Meals foraged from the locale, soothing massages beside a waterfall. That’s when I knew the hotel was the destination.
Venice? That trip was entirely inspired by the Hotel Danieli. And Singapore? Yes Raffles Hotel Singapore was the reason.

I like recommending products or experiences that align with the themes and values of this blog. So yes, there are affiliate links* in this post. If you choose to make a purchase, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Vietnam edged to the top of the list when I wanted to experience the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, thanks to the Conde Nast Traveller spread. So too Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. where we sat out and watch newly weds arrive daily to take wedding photos. From here, we extended our stay to explore Ho Chi Minh City and the impressive temples of Angkor Wat across the border in Cambodia.
As a Skyscanner Creator, I’ve seen first hand how globetrotters are now seeking hotels that are destinations in themselves and the data backs it up.
Now, as Skyscanner reports, this approach is no longer niche. More than ever, holidays are chosen as a result of the hotels or resorts holiday makers want to experience. Hotels themselves are becoming the reason to travel, not just a place to sleep.
And according to the latest data:
45% of travellers have picked a destination purely because of the accommodation.
Gen Z: 61%
Millennials: 50%
Boomers: 26%
We can see why this is happening. Social media has turned stunning stays into the new travel inspiration feed where a single pool photo or design detail sparks a trip. And after years of stop-start travel, many of us now crave retreats, not just a base.
Add to that the rise of remote work and the slow travel mindset. We’re spending longer in one place, choosing hotels that offer creativity, authenticity, exclusivity. It’s less about seeing everything and more about something heartfelt.
Why Hotels Drive Travel Decisions
The modern globetrotter isn’t just seeking another stamp in their passport. No, they’re chasing experiences that are extraordinary. From bold design to once-in-a-lifetime locations, hotels now define the journey. For many, a stay isn’t a base, it’s become the reason to go and in doing so, discover destinations that you may not have considered before.
A standout hotel can:
Set the tone for the entire trip.
Encourage guests to slow down and truly unwind.
Offer an escape that in itself is complete.
The inspiration for future trips.
A place you want to return to, time and time again.
Different Generations, Different Stays
Each generation of jet-setter gravitates toward its own kind of stay. Here’s how the trend is playing out across age groups:
Boomers: Experience and comfort top the list. Many are drawn to heritage and wellness stays such as:
The Plaza, New York – timeless and iconic for its city views.
The Peninsula, Hong Kong – experience-first stays.
Mashpi Lodge, Ecuador – deep in the cloud forest, ideal for immersion in nature.
Arctic Bath Hotel, Sweden – design and serenity under the northern lights.
Blackberry Farm, Tennessee – Southern charm, culinary excellence and calm surroundings.
Millennials: They tend to seek design-driven, experience-rich properties. Think:
The Standard, Bangkok – playful energy and rooftop moments.
Habitas AlUla, Saudi Arabia – desert landscapes and conscious travel.
The Hoxton, Amsterdam – local flair with a community vibe.
Gen Z: This group loves bold visuals and shareable stories. Their picks often include:
Treehotel, Sweden – gravity-defying rooms that spark imagination.
Casa Cook, Rhodes – relaxed, sun-soaked social spaces.
Selina, Medellín – co-living meets adventure.
Choosing Your 'Destination Hotel'
Look for design that reflects local culture
Seek experiences beyond the room (local chefs, wellness, artistry)
Look out for those reviews that mention how it made people feel, not just what they did
