Winter, withdraws our sunlight. Causes us to hone in on those other senses. The dark sharpens attention. The cold. An appetite. Draws people inside, closer to tables, closer to each other. Nearer heat and warmth. In February especially, dining becomes less about novelty and more about choosing the right seat, preferably one set near a real, working fireplace and the right person to share it with.

This isn't a list of every restaurant or pub with a hearth. It is a digest of romantic London rooms where the fire is not decorative, but central. Places chosen for their aesthetics, service and live fireplaces. These are rooms made for couples who know each other, and for whom quality time is a choice not just a necessity.

Think of it as a single winter day where a flame, appetite and atmosphere is the focus. Best shared by people who already know each other well. Those who've got the time to stay. To linger a little longer well.

Scarfes Bar, Rosewood London: The Fireplace For Afternoon into Night

Arrive for four on a winter's evening, when the hum of conversations arrive. Funk grooving through the speakers. The huge fire place, a statement piece roaring with intent, sending light across leather banquettes and glassware. This is one of the rare bars in London where the fireplace is not something you glance at, but one you can sit with.

There are no reservations to be had (unless of course you're staying in one of Rosewood London's rooms) only enquiries to be made.

There's a cocktail bar, raised seats and a good view of the fireplace. But the seat you want is the two-seater velvet snug on your right at the back of the room, set just on the side of the fire. What this place offers in spades is atmosphere. Nooks dug snug in the wall. Faces sculpted by the low light. Order something icy and effervescent because you'll readily sit and talk the night away. And if you are staying in a room, you dictate when you leave. This is your groovy winter sanctuary, the one you'll be planning to return to long before you've left.

Cannot get into Scarfes Bar, Ye Olde Mitre, a traditional British pub with real ale sits close by. Its got a live log-burning fire and has earned some of the highest ratings on TripAdvisor.

The Goring Bar: An all Day Fireplace

Come in out of the London cold to where The Goring Bar comes into its own. Deep armchairs encourage you to rest those sore legs. Throw in it's intimate atmosphere, a signature Garden Negroni cocktail and the best seats in the house and nothing else matters.

Come for a coffee between 8 and 11am. Or see here to make it your all day hang out. If attending in the evening, as Forbes Travel Guide has previously noted the dress code is formal.

And for the ultimate in intimate fireplace setting retreat to your Belgravia Suite with its marble fireplace and your very own dedicated footman.

Whether by a roaring hearth or a Caribbean shoreline, atmosphere always matters for a seriously good bar.

The Rosebery, Mandarin Oriental: Late Breakfast by the Fireplace

Lay-ins are rewarded here. Stay in one of Mandarin Oriental's Hyde Park elegant north facing rooms and watch from your very window, the Royal Horse Guards parade by.

Then make your way as you wish to a table aside a roaring fire. Breakfast here is a treat. Champagne cocktails, eggs Florentine, benedict and royale. Enjoyed in one of the nicest rooms you'll sit in for a long time - The Rosebery. A very good way to start your day!

High ceilings, an abundance of natural light,

colour and of course it's live fireplace. The little details you continue to discover on each return.

Not staying at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, simply drop by The Rosebery on one of those chilly winter days and wile away a few moments here.

Cheneston’s at The Milestone: Lunch and a Live Fireplace

Coming in off your long wintry walk around a London Royal Park to a lunch at Cheneston’s Restaurant will feel rather homely. A traditional English home, one set in the likes of Dorothy Whipple's 'Someone at a Distance.'

Plates arrive with food warm and comforting, suited to these cold days. Try one of Bea Tollman's signature dishes, founder and president of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection.

The fireplace aglow, makes this restaurant very atmospheric.

If lunch is going to drift leisurely into late afternoon, The Anglesea Arms in South Kensington is the place to do it.

Clos Maggiore: Romantic Fireplace Dining After Dark

Save the night for Clos Maggiore. Romantic dinners are made here. Fire and candlelight readily share this space, each amplifying the other. Here, it isn't just the glassware capturing the fire, eyes will too.

Here, the service is exceptional, dining exquisite and the setting... pretty romantic. Romance reaches new heights dining under cherry blossoms and twinkling fairy lights. In hand, champagne bubbles and a readily welcoming fireplace.

It's wine cellar, renowned. Cuisine, Provencal-inspired, it is very easy to see why Clos Maggiore won the title of Worlds Most Romantic Restaurant and maintains a top spot for being one of London's Most Romantic spots.

Now if you tried booking for Valentines Weekend but couldn't get a table, know that midweek lunchtime is just as special. Likely to be less crowded too but shhh.

Winter, after all, is not a season for bookmarking places, but for choosing them well. For finding the right chair, the right table, the right cozy and the right person across from you. These firelit rooms ask very little beyond time but to sit and eat and talk. To allow life and the cold to loosen their grip. Long after the plates are cleared and glasses emptied, that glowing memory will stay with you. A reminder that some of your best London dining can be in the winter by a warm fireplace, having good quality time.

Romance, when done well, is rarely about grand gestures. It’s about the attention. Something personal, something quietly unexpected.
